We need to separate two processes in the generation of fractal images: first, that of discovery, in which the dreamer identifies the visual representation of the mathematical (fractal) reality that appeals to their imagination; second, that of creativity, in which the artist interprets their finding and portrays it on screen. The first stage corresponds to the machine and the domain of —apparent— randomness, or unconsciousness; the second one, building upon the former, pertains to the artist and corresponds to the domain of control, of consciousness. Although the interplay between these two phases is constant, the second one is where I place the beginning of fractal art: when aesthetic takes command of framing, parameters, variables and color leading deliberately to significance. That’s the point in the creative process that only an artist can determine.
