Software in this category are no longer available (at least I couldn’t find them) or don’t run on Windows 10. If you have a computer running an older Windows flavor (pre-Windows 7), you may be able to use them… granted that you find them first.
Qtrnion ~ v0.03
OS: Win
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
url: http://1998.tierazon.com
QTrnion uses Open-GL to plot Mandelbrot-based quaternion fractals and surface maps. Images can be saved as BMP files only. Zip file includes source code. I never used it extensively, so I can’t comment on how it works in detail.

Quaternia ~ v1.0
OS: Win
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
url: http://tierazon.com
Quaternia is a small program to generate quaternion fractals. It is based on Frode Gill’s Quaternion Generator (see below). Images can only be save as BMP files. The 238 kb zipped archive includes the source code. It is no longer available from Ferguson’s site, so most probably it was incorporated into a later program.

Quaternion Generator ~ v1.2
OS: Win3.1/9x/Me
author: Frode Gill
url: n/a
This program will generate Quaternion-Julia fractals. Images cannot be save (although you can save the quaternion values), but you can copy them to the clipboard and paste them into any graphics editor. The help file includes a short explanation on this kind of fractal. Very slow.

Quaternion Julia Navigator ~ v0.91
OS: Win9x/Me/NT
author: PFF Software
url: n/a
This program will calculate 3d slices of 4d quaternion Julia fractals. Needs a 16-bit or better display to operate. Very easy to use. Image size is limited to 400×400 resolution.

Quintessential Sophistry Flame Fractals
OS: Win
author: Michael Sargent
url: http://www.uvm.edu
Flame will generate attractors that model those created by Scott Draves with KTP5 FraxFlame, which he describes as “cosmic recursive fractal flames.” It is intended to use 24 or 32 bit true color graphics modes. It will render images in up to 1600 x 1200 resolution, and save them as GIF or TARGA files. The parameter sets can also be saved as 811-byte PRM files to allow re-rendering at a later time, but won’t save the color map information (so take note). Flame uses FractInt compatible MAP files to color its images.

Quintessential Sophistry SymXaos
OS: Win
author: Michael Sargent
url: http://www.uvm.edu
SymXaos will also generate attractors similar to those described by Michael Field and Martin Golubitsky in SYMMETRY IN CHAOS (Oxford University Press, 1992). It is intended to use 24 or 32 bit true color graphics modes. It will render images in up to 1600 x 1200 resolution, and save them as GIF files that contain the parameter files as with FractInt. It also uses FractInt-compatible MAP files to color its images.

Quintessential Sophistry Win95 Fractals
OS: Win
author: Michael Sargent
url: http://www.uvm.edu
This is a good fractal generator that can also work in as low as 256 color mode (a relic from the distant past). Image’s aspect ratios can be easily alter, so be careful when working on them. All of Sargent’s fractal generators were developed for Windows 95, but still run quite well on Windows 10.

Root-IFS ~ v0.006
OS: Win9x/Me/NT
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
url: http://tierazon.com
As Cold_IFS, Root-IFS plots orbit trajectories using an IFS based formula. The images it produces are usually associated with flame fractals in other fractal generating programs. Pictures can be saved in several different formats; unlike its predecessor it saves parameter values to a file. Also features a button to generate pictures randomly. Compressed (ZIP) file includes source code.

Salomo ~ v2.0
OS: Win9x/Me
author: Niko Wilbert
url: n/a
alt: http://salomo.software.informer.com/
Salomo is a simple tool to explore fractals of the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. It’s pretty intuitive to use, since a window will pop-up whenever you have to make any input. Basic parameters and coloring can be modified with ease. Very nice.

Set Surfer ~ v1.0
OS: Win9x/Me
author: Jason Letbetter
url: n/a
Set Surfer is a small fractal generator that can calculate Mandelbrot and Julia sets fractals. Its interface is pretty simple, and will look familiar to users of Tiera-Zon or InkBlot Kaos, in terms of presentation, although the image’s appearance or style will be different.

Spectral Strange Attractor Chaos Engine
OS: Win9x/Me/NT
author: Steve Giannoni
url: n/a
This one will plot rainbow-colorful spectral strange attractors. It is supposed to save images, but I haven’t been able to do so. As a bonus it comes with a screen saver that also plots attractors on your screen.

Sterling-ware ~ v1.7
OS: Win
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
url: http://1998.tierazon.com
Point-and-click zooming at an incredible speed. This new version includes sine trap functions, Lyapunov exponents, orbit counting, the Triangle Inequality Variation by Damien M. Jones, and “LDerivatives.” Version 1.7 adds some extra new formulas. For those of you curious enough, all past versions of Sterling-ware are available with source code from Iterations et Flarium 24 web site. Source code available. The first version of Sterling-ware is still freely available from Ferguson’s website.

The Talis Project ~ v3.6
OS: DOS
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
url: http://tierazon.com
This is a simple fractal generating program for DOS, but can be use in other MS Windows up to Vista with no problem (it won’t run in more recent versions, and certainly not in Windows 10). It also works very similar to other Ferguson’s generators. I used to like it very much.

Tiera-Zon ~ v2.9
OS: Win
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
url: http://1998.tierazon.com
Tiera-Zon combines great features with great speed. Highly recommended for computers with slow processors. Important: It comes with coloring methods to the ones used in previous versions, so keep those handy in case you need to reproduce earlier images as intended (older parameter files will render, but with totally different, and not necessarily better, color interpretations). Versions 2.8, 2.7, 1.0, and 0.7 are still available from Iterations-et-Flarium24. Tends to crash on Windows XP if user changes parameters too fast. Source code also available. Three older versions (Tiera-Zon 0.07, Tiera-Zon 1.0 and Tiera-Zon 2.7) are freely available in Ferguson’s website, if you want to try this excellent fractal generator; it’s my all-time favorite, if you haven’t noticed yet.

Tiera Zon 2 ~ v0.6
OS: Win
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
url: http://1998.tierazon.com
Tiera Zon 2 works similar to Tiera-Zon, but its formulas and filters are accessible from a secondary window instead of the menu bar. Additional formulas and parameters are also available. This one is known to be slower than its sibling, Tiera-Zon. Source code available. Several earlier versions (v0.01 t0 v0.05) are freely available at Ferguson’s website.

Truemand ~ v3.5
OS: Win3.1/Win9x/NT/Me/2000
author: Ron Barnett
url: http://www.hiddendimension.com
Truemand is an excellent Windows attempt at reproducing Fractint’s functionality, but with true color results. Can work with 256 colors displays. Excellent documentation. Very slow (as FractInt). No longer available.

Ultimate Fractals ~ v1.3
OS: Win9x/Me/NT
author: Terence Sattar
url: n/a
This is a nice, simple and small (though powerful) fractal generator that can do some very nice works. It’s pretty fast, compared to other generators. The only drawback is that you can’t work freely with color palettes, yet it can do more than some others in this respect. Images can be saved as parameter files (to reuse later) or BMP files.

Vchira ~ v0.5
OS: Win
author: Stephen C. Ferguson
url: http://tierazon.com
Another great fractal generator from Stephen Ferguson’s genius, Vchira was (and possibly still is) the first freeware fractal generator (as far as I know) to introduce layers and alpha channels. And it is as good as all of the other software in Ferguson’s outstanding collection. Source code available. Note: it seems Ferguson retired this program some time ago and is no longer available on his website.

WinMand ~ v18.2
OS: Win9x/Me/NT/XP
author: Robert Banting
url: http://soler7.com
WinMand is another simple program designed to explore the Mandelbrot set, and nothing more. It’s very simple, using only the left and right mouse buttons to select an area and zoom in as you wish. It used to be available through Soler’s web site, but not anymore.
